I loved how in the beginning, Callie demonstrated how people of color can still be racist/fatphobic/etc. She starts out as mean and competitive and jealous and after participating in a prank-gone-wrong with her dance team and being the only one convicted of the crime, Callie goes through a lot of lifestyle changes. This is a story about forging your own path and pursuing what you really believe in, which for Millie, was broadcast journalism.Ĭallie, on the other hand, was a little more…problem ridden.

Puddin

This isn’t a story about weight-loss, which I loved. She loves crafts, she knows who her friends are, and she accepts her body and being fat. Millie is so much fun and although she’s kind of a rule-stickler, she still has those rebel moments which I find really cool. I do think I like Ramona Blue more just because I could really connect with Ramona a lot more than I did with Millie (and Callie), but I still think Millie is an awesome person (Callie, ehhh). It was a little iffy in Dumplin’ as I thought there were a few places that could use some work, but it was relaly marvelous in both Ramona Blue and Puddin’. Especially with Puddin’ and its two storylines, I think Murphy did a really great job with the shaping of the story and the plot structure. There’s just something about how Murphy manages to tie everything together and make it come full circle.

I didn’t realize how much I missed Julie Murphy’s writing until I started reading this.

Puddin

It’s been a while since I read Dumplin’, but getting the chance to read Puddin’ early was really awesome. At the same time, Callie is the queen bee of the school, but with other girls, she’s more frenemy than friend.Īnd when circumstances (which may or may not include vandalism) bring the two girls together, they’ll surprise everyone at how they might have more in common than they could have imagined. This year, Millie is going to chase after her secret dream of broadcast journalism and also finally kiss her crush, instead of going to fat camp this summer.
